Consulting Actuary

Hooker & Holcombe (H&H) located in Bloomfield, CT is one of the fastest-growing actuarial, retirement services and investment advisory consulting firms in New England. Our Actuarial Services Unit currently has an immediate opening for an experienced Consulting Actuary. The ideal candidate must be an enrolled actuary that has 10 years of pension experience and possesses strong oral, written and presentation skills.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Provide actuarial consulting services to H&H pension and OPEB clients
- Serve as a lead project manager for clients

Perform the following functions:
- Consult with clients, prospects, and consultants on private sector or public sector funding requirements and the potential current, and future, funding impact of plan redesign
- Consult on expense requirements and financial statement outcomes (both pension and OPEB)
- Certify the annual actuarial valuation report, certify the IRS Form 5500 Schedule SB, and certify the PBGC premium filing
- Review the ASC 715 expense and disclosure reports for the plan sponsor and auditor, when required, and consult with them regarding the basis for the calculations and results
- Provide technical support, consulting, and education to clients
- Analyze statistical data, such as mortality, disability, turnover, and retirement rates
- Review experience studies to test actuarial assumptions, and develop proposed assumptions and contribution allocation procedures
- Respond to client requests
- Prepare for and present results, etc. at client meetings
- Manages significant book of business
- Ensure that all client deadlines are met
- Prepare client bills and all internal billing estimates

Review work that has been completed by the actuarial analyst, including:
- Actuarial Valuation Report
- Benefit statements
- FAS ASC 715 reports
- Government filings
- Benefit calculations
- Gain/loss analysis
- Determinstic and stochastic projections
- Cost estimates
- Plan audit data
- Experience studies

Review special projects, including:
- Non-discrimination testing
- Asset-liability studies
- Special accounting work (SSAP 89, IAS 19, CAS 412 & 413, FRS 17, etc.)
Non-client related tasks:
- Provide consultation on complex projects and is considered to be a top level contributor/specialist at H&H
- Assist in the business development process to nurture and close new business
- Provide leadership and mentoring to staff
- Assist with training for both new and existing employees
- Present internal workshops
- Participate in DB Actuaries meetings
- Consults with marketing and sales to provide plan design and proposals for both traditional and cash balance defined benefit new sales
Professional responsibilities/relationship building:
- Demonstrates expertise in a variety of the actuarial field’s concepts, practices, and procedures
- Establish and develop client and industry relationships
- Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Maintain continuing education requirements.
- Adhere to the professional codes of conduct
- Stay abreast of changes in the current business and legal environment that impact our work
- Seek opportunities to expand upon existing client relationships, and possibly create new relationships
- Seek to establish trusting client relationships and deliver professional and responsive customer service
- Interact with clients in a professional manner
- Work effectively with H&H actuarial analysts, managers, and Consultants
Job requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Must be an Enrolled Actuary
- Must work at least 40 hours per week
- Must be willing to work as a 2nd Actuary on some cases
- Must have at least 10 years of Pension Experience that includes a broad range of work (including nondiscrimination testing, ASC 715 (pension and OPEB), experience studies, plan design, major client contact)
- Must be proficient with all software used in the Actuarial Services Unit (including Excel and ProVal)
- Must have a thorough understanding of the rules, regulations, and calculations inherent in our work (including actuarial mathematics, actuarial cost methods, IRS regulations, FASB and GASB accounting standards, etc.)
- Must have strong oral and written communication and presentation skills
